Chevron Bangladesh has formally announced to have completed its two-year pilot project on community-based green economy at a function recently at Habiganj, reports UNB.
The project – ‘Community-Driven Green Initiatives (CDGI)’, was undertaken by different companies under Chevron Bangladesh for economic development of the local communities, said a press release.
The Chevron Bangladesh Companies’ partner NGO, Institute of Development Affairs, recently implemented this initiative for 227 households in 22 villages around their Bibiyana gas plant in Nabiganj Upazila under Habiganj.
Participants were given the opportunity to showcase their key successes and learning of CDGI, which sought to promote sustainable, organic farming practices in pond-fish culture, vegetable and fruit gardening and cultivation of cash crops.
In addition to boosting income and agricultural production by up to 37 per cent, the project also provided capacity-development trainings, seed funds and created linkages to markets and input providers.
The Chevron Bangladesh companies are subsidiaries of Chevron Corporation, one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies. They produce natural gas from the three gas fields of Bibiyana, Jalalabad and Moulvibazar in north-eastern Bangladesh.
