Negros Oriental – “Bokashi,” a form of organic fertilizer, was introduced to farmers recently through a lecture held at the Provincial Agriculturist Office (PAO) compound in Dumaguete City Wednesday. “Bokashi,” an Effective Microorganisms (EM) technology, was developed in Japan.
According to PAO Officer Joshua Demerre, bokashi helps the soil to be more fertile. It can be made in one’s backyard and the ingredients needed to create this fertilizer are easy to find. Demerre demonstrated how to create a bokashi compost by combining two sacks of copra mill, one sack of rice brand, three sacks of rice hull, 40 liters of water, and 200 grams of molasses. Farmers have to wait three to 14 days before they can use the bokashi and mix it with other organic fertilizers like vermicompost.
He explained that this technology will fill the soil with more nutrients which will be absorbed by the plants which then makes vegetables and other farm products more nutritious. The organic farming lecture is part of annual Buglasan Farm-Family Agri-Fair held at PAO compound.
