Expansion Trends for the Organic Cosmetics Market
In the natural and organic cosmetics market, there is a growing number of people who are facing skin problems irrespective of gender, increases in safety concerns about cosmetics and in the number of consumers oriented towards an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
Producers and distributors also paid more attention to the functionality of products, increased the number of dealerships and developed more of E-Commerce sites. As a result,the points of contact with consumers are increasing. The domestic market scale in 2017 is based on the shipment value of brand manufacturers, which was 4.9% compared with the previous fiscal year and grew to 129.7 billion yen.
Forecasts for fiscal 2018 are 103.0 billion yen, 4.1% more than in previous year. The market size will continue to expand and it is expected that it will maintain a growth of 3% to 4% until FY 2022.

Natural cosmetic products
Natural cosmetic products refer to cosmetics that meet the criteria of (1) natural plant material as the main ingredient, (2) limited use of chemically synthesized ingredients.
Organic cosmetics
Organic cosmetics must comply with the following: (1) They have acquired organic certification by a third-party organization. (2) Most of the ingredients are using organic raw material produced by their own company and/or from contractedorganic farmers. (3) Organic ingredients are added to most of the brand lineup.
The Japan Cosmetic Industry Association compiled and published in April 2018 “Industry guidelines for natural and organic cosmetics about standards for the proportion of natural and organic ingredients in cosmetics”. This is a standard for natural and organic cosmetics based on “ISO 16128” and also a useful guideline for consumers.
